One product is gasoline. Infact some of the cleanest gasoline in the world is made from heavy oil and the gasoline meets or exceed CARB (California Air Resources Board) standards for sulfur, aromatics, etc.

In addition to gasoline, heavy oil can also be processed into vairous other products such as diesel fuel, jet fuel, asphalt and coke.

In the world, 5.5 million barrels of heavy oil and bitumen are produced each day (73 million b/d is daily world oil production, February 1999). In the USA, 720,000 b/d of heavy oil are produced or about 12 % of total USA oil production. Heavy oil constitutes 70% of California's daily oil production. Oil from oil sands and heavy oil is nearly 70% of western Canada's oil production.
